This unit covers the competency required to observe and direct machine gun fire onto targets in accordance with standard procedures in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application

This competency was developed for combat arms personnel required to observe and direct machine gun fire in a deployed operational environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.

While this work will be undertaken under the commander’s direction, the individual must also have authority to act independently.

All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT	PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
1. Occupy and prepare a location	1.1 An appropriate vantage point is occupied and concealment is maintained throughout operation. 1.2 Occupied position is established in accordance with standard procedures. 1.3 Reference points are established and documented in accordance with standard procedures. 1.4 Possible threats are observed and monitored and an appropriate plan of action is prepared.
2. Plan the engagement of firepower	2.1 Standard terminology is used so that clear communication with all stakeholders is maintained. 2.2 Target position is established. 2.3 Altitude of target is determined from map. 2.4 Communications are maintained with stakeholders throughout the operation and personnel safety in the target area is ensured. 2.5 Target is described to stakeholders. 2.6 Type of engagement is determined and instructions are conveyed to the gun line.
3. Direct fire onto target	3.1 Planning information is transmitted to the command post. 3.2 Direction to fire is transmitted to the gun line. 3.3 Target analysis is completed after impact and if appropriate referred to supervisor. 3.4 Adjustments of fire are completed or terminated as required.
4. Withdraw from an occupied location	4.1 Occupied position is reconditioned and all evidence of occupation is removed. 4.2 Secure withdrawal from the occupied position is conducted.

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

maintain safety of friendly personnel at all times

complete a minimum of two live fire missions using sustained fire machine guns to engage the target

cope with a high intensity situation encountered in a threat environment

recognise and apply own level of authority.
